Cool Weather Skincare Tips
- Posted on: Nov 15 2017
As the holidays roll in, so do cooler temperatures. After the heat of summer, the winter months are a welcome relief to many, but they can wreak havoc on your skin. These simple tips can be integrated into your daily routine to help guard your skin against dryness, cracking, and itchiness.
Steer clear of super hot baths
When it’s cool outside, soaking in a steaming bath sounds fantastic, but you won’t be doing any favors for your skin. The scorching heat of the hot water will diminish the lipid barriers in the skin, resulting in moisture loss. Opt for a warm bath and stay in the water for a shorter period. If your skin is itchy or irritated, try a lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda. Reapply lotion throughout the day to help retain moisture and ward off cold weather irritation. If neither of these methods shows any improvement, you may need to see a skin specialist.
Drop the face peels
If colder weather makes your skin intensely dry, avoid using masks, peels, or alcohol-based toners. These will steal oil from your skin and leave it feeling dry and irritated. Instead, choose a cleansing milk or a hydrating foaming cleanser. Masks that are clay based will suck up moisture from your face, so be sure you always check the ingredients.
Don’t forget your feet
Our feet do so much for us, but we rarely stop to give them some much needed TLC. At the end of the day, apply a moisturizer that contains glycerin or petroleum jelly. An exfoliant can be used to rid the feet of dead skin, and it will help lotions sink in deeper.
Make sunscreen your best friend
Just because the days feel cooler doesn’t mean the sun can’t damage your skin. Invest in a quality sunscreen that you like the feel and smell of so you are more likely to use it. Put it in a place you can’t miss, like next to your bathroom sink, and apply it to your face and any exposed skin at least a half hour before leaving the house.
