When the Temperatures Start to Cool, Don’t Forget to Protect your Skin.

The cool temperatures of fall can have a negative affect on the look and feel of your skin. With the arrival of October, here are some basic tips to keep your skin looking fresh this season.
Protect your hands
The skin on your hands is thinner and has fewer oil glands in comparison to other parts of your body. This can make it difficult to keep your hands moisturized, particularly during the colder months ahead. When hands don’t feel moisturized, they can start to feel itchy and cracked. To help shield your hands, wear gloves when you go outdoors.
Put a humidifier in your house
Central heating systems are wonderful in the cooler months, but they can wreak havoc on your sensitive skin. Humidifiers can help by supplying more moisture in the air. This can ease your itchy and dry skin.
Avoid wet clothes
If that recent rainstorm left you feeling chilled and wet, be sure to remove your socks and gloves right when you get home. Wet gloves and socks can cause itching, sores, cracking, or irritate the skin to the point that eczema could develop.
Don’t forget your feet
After a long day running errands or at the office, give your feet a rest. Lather up with lotions containing glycerin or petroleum jelly, as opposed to the lighter minty versions you may use during the summer. Occasionally, use an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. This will allow moisturizers to penetrate the skin more quickly.
Don’t take hot baths
Unusually hot baths break down the lipid barriers in the skin. This can lead to moisture loss resulting in dry and cracked skin. Instead, opt for a lukewarm soak in the tub using oatmeal or baking soda. This will help ease any itchiness or dryness. If you suffer from dry skin all of the time, regularly reapply a high-quality moisturizer throughout the day. If you notice that your dry, flaky skin never seems to relax, you may need a prescription moisturizer.
